Alek Thomas, Jackson Ferris Sweep PCL Weekly Awards

The Oklahoma City Comets are entering the Pacific Coast League Championship Series with two of the league’s hottest players.

Alek Thomas was named PCL Player of the Week, while Dodgers pitching prospect Jackson Ferris earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the period of September 14–20.

The sweep followed a strong conclusion to Oklahoma City’s regular season. The Comets finished with an 89-50 record—the best overall mark in the PCL—and will open the championship series against the Las Vegas Aviators on Tuesday.

Ferris Delivers The Best Start Of His Career

Ferris earned his award with one dominant performance.

The 22-year-old left-hander struck out a career-high 13 batters across 7⅔ scoreless innings in Oklahoma City’s 12-0 victory over El Paso on Wednesday.

Ferris allowed only one hit, a soft ground ball that remained in the infield, and issued one walk. He worked with little room for error through most of the outing, as Oklahoma City held only a 1-0 lead through six innings before breaking the game open late.

The victory secured the PCL’s second-half championship and a place in the championship series for the Comets.

Ferris entered the start having allowed no more than one earned run in each of his previous five outings. His performance against El Paso represented another step forward for one of the most important young pitchers in the Dodgers’ system.

He is currently ranked as the organization’s No. 4 prospect by MLB Pipeline.

The Dodgers acquired Ferris from the Chicago Cubs in January 2024 alongside Zyhir Hope in the trade that sent Michael Busch and Yency Almonte to Chicago.

His progression has required patience, but his combination of strikeout ability and left-handed starting upside continues to make him one of the organization’s most intriguing pitching prospects.

Thomas Reaches Base Eight Times In Doubleheader

Thomas built his Player of the Week case through consistent production at the plate.

During Oklahoma City’s two games Friday, Thomas reached base eight times in nine plate appearances.

He recorded a triple, two singles and two walks in the first game before adding two doubles and another walk in the second. Thomas scored four runs and drove in two as the Comets swept the doubleheader.

He then helped Oklahoma City finish the regular season with another victory Sunday.

Thomas collected two of the Comets’ eight hits and drove in the deciding run with an eighth-inning triple, giving Oklahoma City a 2-1 win over El Paso.

The victory allowed the Comets to complete the regular season with the best record in the league.

Thomas brings significant Major League experience to Oklahoma City after appearing in more than 400 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks. His strong closing week gives the Comets an experienced center fielder producing at the right time.

Comets Turn Their Attention To Las Vegas

The weekly awards arrive immediately before Oklahoma City begins its pursuit of a PCL championship.

The Comets will travel to Las Vegas for the best-of-three series against the Aviators. Game 1 is scheduled for Tuesday, followed by Game 2 on Wednesday and a potential deciding game Thursday.

Oklahoma City qualified for the championship series by winning the second half, while Las Vegas claimed the first-half title.

The winner will advance to the Triple-A National Championship Game on Saturday, September 26, against either Rochester or Memphis from the International League.

Oklahoma City’s roster includes a combination of experienced players and several important members of the Dodgers’ minor league system. Ferris gives the Comets a potential difference-maker on the mound, while Thomas enters the series coming off one of his best offensive stretches of the season.

Their weekly awards recognize two different types of performances.

Ferris delivered the dominant start that secured Oklahoma City’s place in the championship series. Thomas supplied consistent offense throughout the final week and drove in the winning run in the regular-season finale.

Now both will try to carry that momentum into a series that could send the Comets to the Triple-A National Championship Game.
